According to the bio on his FB page, Ilan Rubin from San Diego, has played with Nine Inch Nails, Angels & Airwaves and Paramore. I didn’t know all this when I arrived half-way through his band The New Regime’s set opening for Welsh act, The Joy Formidable, at The Irenic in North Park.
What I found was a band that combined elements of modern alt-rock and classic-rock guitar heroics. Check out this video from The Irenic performance of the song “Tap Dancing in a Mine Field”. And be sure to look out for that sweet Brian May guitar lick in the middle of the extended guitar solo. I spoke to Rubin briefly after the show and after admitting that he was a big Brian May fan he told me that they usually close out their sets with this number since he can stretch it out to any length to fit the time remaining. Apparently this time there was 8:47 left!
